Congratulations to all of the June college graduates, including the 20 seniors who attended Kwame’ Foundation’s college tours over their 2019 Spring Break. A total of 128 high school juniors and seniors from 16 area high schools participated this year. The Kwame Foundation organized the weeklong bus trip to seven Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and provided transportation and chaperones.
“Our goal is to increase the number of African-American students who enroll in and graduate from a college or university. We hope this experience will motivate and inspire students to achieve their goals and aspirations,” said project administrator Sonja Branscomb.
The students visited Arkansas Pine Bluff University, Prairie View A& M University, Texas Southern University, Xavier University of Louisiana, Southern University Baton Rouge, Alcorn University and Jackson State University.
The college tour introduced students to campus life and included a series of informational sessions. Tour leaders arranged on-site visits with college officials, matching the students’ educational goals and career aspirations with institutions of higher learning. Several students received one or more college offers on-site at the college visits. The student cost to participate was just $400.
“We support the students as they explore their future beyond their own neighborhoods and communities,” said Branscomb. “We want them to realize that their life goals are attainable. Without question, this tour is a life changing experience.”
