ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI – The City of St. Louis has contracted Kwame Building Group, Inc. (KWAME) to provide construction supervision and materials testing services for a taxiway reconstruction project at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. Construction is expected to begin in September 2014 and be completed in 2015.The contract includes three projects: reconstruction of a taxiway, removal of a taxiway, and reconstruction of an apron. The PCC pavement that will be removed from the old 75-foot-wide taxiway, originally built in 1979, will be reused in the reconstruction.

Workers will recycle 42,000 square yards of existing 16” PCC pavement to build the new Taxiway Echo from Taxiway Sierra to Taxiway Papa. The project also calls for removal of a 6” bituminous layer and a 6” aggregate base, reconstruction of pavement shoulders, installation of drainage underdrains, and improvements to airfield electrical lighting.

For the taxiway removal project, approximately 3,300 square yards of taxiway pavement and base layers will be removed from Runway 6/24 to Taxiway Sierra and replaced with turf. New shoulders and runway/taxiway edge lights also will be installed.

Reconstruction of the north apron (Lima Pad) will include removal of 23,400 square feet of pavement and base, and construction of an island to eliminate potential runway incursions. The taxiway removal and apron reconstruction projects are part of a Lambert initiative to modernization the airfield and improve aircraft safety.

KWAME currently is the project manager on Lambert’s nearly complete $70 million Airport Experience renovation project. KWAME also managed restoration of Concourse C and other areas following the EF4 tornado that hit the airport in 2011.
